In a quiet backwater between Milsom Street and Queen Square a new restaurant/bar has opened. And it is big. Very big. When the roof terrace opens in a few weeks it can accommodate over 200 covers.

It is Hall and Woodhouse named after its Dorset brewery owners.

We popped in for lunch. Nothing too startling on the menu, but a big selection of the classics such as soup breads, steak, burgers, cottage pie, stargazy pie, etc. The selections we picked were absolutely fine, obviously made from good fresh ingredients. The deserts were lovely, the ice cream in particular was fantastic, though the treacle tart with custard was also very fine.

The staff were lovely, providing excellent service and the prices were not outrageous – our bill for two main courses, two deserts and two drinks was £33.

We will go again. Hall and Woodhouse had a light and airy atmosphere at lunchtime – It will be interesting to see what it is like in the evening.

Oh, did I mention the building? They have spent a few million on what used to be Bonham’s Auction Rooms, and it shows. Some photos below may give an idea.
